About Me

Lucy Bryan, the Personal Statement Lady, sits in the woods and smiles.

Lucy Bryan is a writer, editor, and writing consultant with nearly a decade and a half of experience in higher education. She spent nine years on the faculty at the James Madison University Writing Center, where she worked with hundreds of students on their application essays and earned her reputation as the “Personal Statement Lady.”

Lucy has supported students from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds through the process of writing application essays for college, graduate school, study abroad programs, internships, scholarships, fellowships, and medical residencies. She loves getting to know each of her client’s stories and helping them put their experiences and aspirations into writing as they prepare to take the next step in their vocational journeys.

A lifelong lover of words, Lucy earned her B.A. in Journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her M.F.A. in Creative Writing at the Pennsylvania State University. She has written and published in many genres. Her award-winning essays have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and listed as “notable” in Best American Essays. Her book, In Between Places: A Memoir in Essays (Homebound Publications, June 2022) won a silver Nautilus Award. Her academic research has also appeared in journals including The Writing Center Journal.

Lucy is mom to two energetic kids, and she loves hiking, gardening, knitting, and reading.
